Veteran QB Andy Dalton wraps up three seasons as Carolina Panthers backup

Andy Dalton, born October 29, 1987, spent three seasons with the Carolina Panthers from 2023 to 2024, primarily serving as backup to Bryce Young, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft by Carolina.[1][2]

In 2024, Dalton started four games for the Panthers after Young's early-season struggles and injury, posting an 0-4 record. His starts came in Weeks 5-8 against the Atlanta Falcons (20-38 loss), Washington Commanders (7-29 loss), New Orleans Saints (13-28 loss), and Tampa Bay Buccaneers (22-24 loss).[1][3]

Dalton previously started nine seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals from 2011 to 2019, where he went 70-61-2 as a starter and led the team to four consecutive playoff berths from 2011 to 2014, though the Bengals won no postseason games during his tenure.[1][4]

Following his time in Cincinnati, Dalton joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 as a backup, started eight games for the Chicago Bears in 2021 (going 1-7), and started 11 games for the New Orleans Saints in 2022 (3-8 record).[1]

The Philadelphia Eagles relied on Tanner McKee as primary backup to starter Jalen Hurts during the 2023 season, when Philadelphia finished 11-6 before a 9-32 wild-card playoff loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Lincoln Financial Field.[5][6]

McKee, an undrafted free agent out of Stanford, appeared in three regular-season games in 2023 with limited action.[7]

The Eagles acquired Kenny Pickett from the Pittsburgh Steelers in March 2024 in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and other considerations, positioning him as a potential backup option entering the 2025 offseason.[8]
