Jay Bilas, a forward who played for Duke University from 1982 to 1986 under head coach Mike Krzyzewski, described how Krzyzewski simplified the 64-team NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament bracket during Bilas's senior year to reduce pressure on the team.[1][2]
The 1985 tournament marked the expansion to a 64-team field, making 1986 its second year.[3] Duke, the No. 1 seed in the East region with a 26-3 record entering the tournament, hosted first- and second-round games at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, North Carolina.[3][4]
Bilas recounted that Krzyzewski presented the opening weekend as a four-team "Greensboro Invitational," focusing only on Duke's immediate opponents: Mississippi Valley State in the first round (85-78 win on March 13) and Old Dominion in the second round (73-65 win on March 15).[3][4]
For the East regional at Meadowlands Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Krzyzewski similarly framed it as a four-team bracket. Duke defeated DePaul 80-70 in the Sweet 16 on March 20. On the opposite side, Navy—led by senior center David Robinson—beat Tulsa 87-68 before losing 87-72 to Louisville, who then eliminated Duke 88-69 in the Elite Eight on March 22.[3][4]
Bilas, now an ESPN college basketball analyst, said the approach helped Duke players ignore the rest of the bracket, concentrating solely on advancing one game at a time. He noted it limited his recall of other 1986 tournament events.[5]
Krzyzewski coached Duke from 1980 to 2022, winning five national championships, including the 2015 title.
