Ex-Nebraska coach admits sex with player in deposition
Chuck Love, former associate head coach of the Nebraska women's basketball team, admitted in a February deposition to a sexual relationship with ex-player Ashley Scoggin. The admission came in court documents tied to Scoggin's 2024 civil lawsuit against Love and university officials. Love had previously denied the allegations.
Scoggin, who played two seasons for the Cornhuskers after hailing from Dallas, Oregon, described Love taking a special interest in her that turned sexual, leading her to fear retaliation. She filed suit accusing Love, head coach Amy Williams, former athletic director Trev Alberts and the university's Board of Regents of failing to implement safeguards against staff-student-athlete relationships. A March 17 filing noted Love's admission on February 5, after he initially rejected claims of seeking sexual relationships, discussing inappropriate topics or inviting her for drinks.
Scoggin and Love were dismissed from the program the same day in February 2022 - her from the team, him suspended with pay - following teammates finding her fully clothed in his hotel room on a road trip. Love resigned three months later. Scoggin transferred to UNLV.
The university stated Scoggin's removal stemmed from dishonesty and distrust with teammates. Williams and Alberts responded to the suit lacking sufficient information to confirm or deny the relationship.
