Fans boo Healey, Wu at Red Sox home opener
Massachusetts Gov. Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu drew boos from more than 36,000 fans during a pregame ceremony at Fenway Park. The Democratic politicians walked the field before the Boston Red Sox's home opener against the San Diego Padres on Friday. Video of the jeers quickly spread on social media.
Healey and Wu have faced criticism over their stances on immigration enforcement. Wu recently stated federal agents involved in Boston operations would face investigation, filming and accountability. Healey on Thursday called on two private airlines to halt flights for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement deportations, following a shooting involving ICE in Minneapolis.
GOP candidates for Massachusetts governor seized on the moment. Brian Shortsleeve posted a video from Fenway, noting the loud boos amid a close game. Mike Minogue shared footage with the caption that fans wanted someone else "up to bat." Mike Kennealy simply praised Red Sox Nation.
The incident occurred amid other scrutiny of the officials. In October, one of Healey's aides faced arrest for cocaine trafficking linked to a state office building. Wu drew controversy in February by labeling federal immigration actions in Boston as unconstitutional and releasing related surveillance footage.
